There was a strong athletics ethos in the school. Lots of medals had been won and there were a couple of glass cases full of trophies. In the end I decided to paint the relay team. Originally I had intended to show a lot more students lounging around on the playing field as they were inclined to do, but this much more Spartan composition worked the best with the nice diagonal of runners. This was the last painting to be completed, mainly because the grass took such a long time.
